MPs to vote on national anthem for England

MPs are expected to vote later on the idea of England adopting an official national anthem.
God Save the Queen, the national anthem for the UK as a whole, is currently used for England during most sporting events.
However, Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins believes England needs its own anthem and the idea has the support of several campaigners.
Any suggestions?

I don't consider myself English, but I wouldn't want anything with mention of a god in it. Now any old foreign anthems with new words.

I'm not particularly religious but I think the words of Jerusalem are some of the greatest lines in the English language. I think it's usually thought of as more of a political song than a religious one, although it's not tied to any particular political ideology.

God save The Queen is a fucking dirge and why the hell do we want an imaginary friend to save someone who has the best health care in the world!

What a waste of fucking time, whats wrong with God save the Queen, its English in origin isnt it? and the English after all conquered the other members of the Union so its used for the UK and England, which is why the Scots, Welsh and Paddys have there own and we dont.

This is just the sort of thing your average politically correct type will get into and try and force the outcome, any new anthem and its lyrics will have to reflect “Modern day Britain in the 21st century” its going to have to be multicultural, with references to the gay community, Islam, one parent families and the unemployed with music derived from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe.

I like Swing low, the players can all do the hand signals too, would put the Hakka in it's place. It will of course not change or if it is, it will be one of the uplifting dull ones previously mentioned.

Bare minimum should be compulsory for children to rise and observe the national anthem at the start of every school week

Would also make the teaching of English history along with the acknowledgement of our roles as sworn protectors of the Queens realm an absolute priority, especially in inner city schools with large percentages of kids with a lack of white English ancestry

If it's an anthem for England then the electorate of England should have a referendum. To simply have MPs vote for it is not at all fair or representative.

Jerusalem is to a fantastic tune by Parry. However has anyone who recommends it actually listened to the words? It is (a) very religious which does not suit a secular country, and (b) not flattering to modern England at all.

I don't want a hymn or anything vaguely religious. It should be England My England by Alan Price. Although it sounds a little bit Eastern European / Fiddler on the Roof in parts.

Bloody pointless. If you need a song before an event just sing a nice song, someone pick one and everyone else join in.

There are only a select group of people that get all stirred about patriotism left and the rest of the population I doubt truly gives a shit whether a song is sung or not.


Failing that, why not do what England has always done, go to another country, preferably a less developed nation and just steal theirs...Sorted

In Blake's poem from which the 'hymn' was taken it's about Jesus supposedly travelling to England and establishing a Jerusalem here. most interpretations suggest that Jerusalem is just another word for Heaven. Meaning that England is Heaven.....and rightly so.
